Women with under eye circles know how frustrating it can be to wake up in the morning and immediately be frustrated with your face. If you’ve been suffering from the problem for a while, then you may have stumbled upon the endless amount of remedies that swear they’ll fix the problem. From placing cucumbers and or potatoes under our eyes, to freezing spoons and placing them on the bags and circles themselves, it seems like all of the remedies are real duds. With so many frustrating fails, it almost felt life saving when we came across Darshika Patel’s DIY Baking Soda treatment.
According to Patel’s YouTube video, creating a mixture of baking soda and a few drops of water creates the perfect paste to remove under eye bags and circles. Patel uses the back of a spoon to apply the mixture onto her under eyes. She also states specifically to smear the mixture and not to rub it into the skin in order to avoid further irritation.
“Your dark circles will get worse if you irritate the delicate skin under your eyes,” she states.
After about five to ten minutes, remove the mixture and behold, no more under eye bags or circles. Since discovering the video, we decided to look into the legitimacy of this amazing mixture. Contacting dermatologist, Joshua Zeichner, MD, Refinery 29 found that the dermatologist had his own opinion on the baking soda advice.
“Baking soda may give a modest improvement in the appearance of undereye skin, but you need to be careful about causing skin irritation. Baking soda has an alkaline pH, while the skin’s natural pH is slightly acidic, which is necessary for healthy skin-cell functioning. Increasing the pH can lead to irritation and impairment of the skin barrier,” Zeichner stated.
